There is a new arrival at Denver Zoo’s Emerald Forest building — and her name is Penny.

The zoo announced on Thursday the birth and public debut of the red ruffed lemur to mother Sixpence and father Mego. Penny, born April 25, has been spending time behind the scenes and bonding with her mother, and zookeepers say the baby is doing well.

Penny is the second birth for Sixpence and Mego, which were paired under the recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan. The pair welcomed quadruplets in 2011. Sixpence was born at Denver Zoo in June 1998. Mego was born at the San Diego Zoo in April 2004 and came to Denver in April 2008.

The number of red ruffed lemurs left in the wild isn’t known, but the International Union for Conservation of Nature designates the species as endangered. Their range in the wild has been reduced to a small area in northeastern Madagascar, mainly due to habitat destruction.

The baby lemur is the newest addition to the zoo, which also has celebrated the recent high-profile births of , , and .
