A new local chapter of a national anti-gun violence organization has started in Longmont this year and will hold a picnic on Saturday. 
Moms Demand Action is a national organization that supports the Second Amendment but also “believe common-sense solutions can help decrease the escalating epidemic of gun violence,” according to the organization’s website.
Shannon Watts, a Coloradan, founded the national organization after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. The Longmont chapter just started in January.
Audrey Wilcox, a Longmont resident who is a member of the group, said that she joined partly because her sister was killed in a shooting in Kansas City in 2007.
The group is working on building their membership and organizing for right now. Mayor Dennis Coombs signed a proclamation on May 23 designating Friday as Gun Violence Awareness Day in Longmont.
