A BNSF train derailed in east Boulder, prompting nearby businesses to evacuate over hazardous material concerns and causing a traffic snarl that saw bumper-to-bumper traffic along several city streets.

It was soon determined that the most of the train cars that derailed were empty, save one that contained non-hazardous plastic beads and flipped over, and officials soon lifted the evacuations.

No one was injured, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The derailment happened shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday on the east/ west tracks between 55th and 63rd streets south of Arapahoe Avenue, according to Boulder Fire spokeswoman Kim Scott.
