Edgewater police officer who suffered heart attack in struggle with DUI suspect is improving

An Edgewater police officer who suffered a heart attack during a struggle with a DUI suspect has been moved out of an intensive care unit, authorities said Friday.

Cpl. Michael Nesbitt is recuperating but remains in the hospital, according to a news release by Jenny Fulton, spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

“He and his family wish to thank everyone for their support and positive thoughts and prayers,” according to a statement released by the Edgewater Police Department.

Nesbitt had and was in critical condition at Lutheran Hospital.

The when officers tried to stop the driver of a motorized scooter for suspected DUI, according to a police department news release.

The driver of the scooter, Connor Michael Dougherty, 26, wrecked the vehicle in the parking lot of Jefferson High School, 2305 Pierce St., police said.

Dougherty then fought officers as they tried to put him in custody, police said.

Both Dougherty and Nesbitt were taken to a hospital. Dougherty was treated, released and booked into the Jefferson County Jail on suspicion of multiple charges including second-degree assault of a police officer.
