A Larimer County Sheriff’s deputy has been cleared for his role in the June 30 shooting death of a suspect between Loveland and Fort Collins.

Details of the June 30 incident near Carpenter Road and Timberline Road, as well as the previous , were released by Larimer County district attorney Cliff Riedel in an eight-page ruling Thursday.

According to the report, Knuppel died from a single gunshot fired by Larimer County Sheriff’s deputy Derek Signorelli, who was using an AR-15 rifle at a distance of about 25 yards.

Knuppel was the third suspect killed by Larimer County law enforcement officers this year.

Riedel’s report outlines the chaos that led to up to the shooting — Knuppel had reportedly crashed a car stolen from his parents and then attempted to carjack another vehicle from an elderly couple, threatening to shoot the pair and making a motion indicating he had a gun in his rear waistband.

When police sirens were audible, Knuppel fled into a field. As officers arrived, they tried to chase him to bring him into custody — and were told about the threats he had made regarding a gun.

When they got close, Knuppel reportedly turned and came back toward the officers and was shot by Signorelli.
