A Fort Collins baby died from asphyxia after apparently being Larimer County authorities said Tuesday.
The infant’s mother, 28-year-old Mandi Woodall, is being held at the Larimer County Jail on a $10,000 bond. Woodall was arrested May 25 on suspicion of felony child abuse resulting in death.
The asphyxiation of 3-month-old Riko Walker, on May 23, was caused by constrictive bedding and “overlying” while co-sleeping, according to the coroner’s office. The manner of death has been ruled an accident.
Woodall had told investigators she took a two-hour nap with the child and he was unresponsive when she awoke. Authorities believe she had been sleeping for nearly an entire day — about 18 hours — and that drugs played a role. The incident was on Woodall’s birthday.
Woodall is also being held on two counts of misdemeanor child abuse in the case. Two other children were at the home the day of the incident and were uninjured, but they showed signs of neglect, police said.
