An armed man who was fatally shot by police in Colorado Springs has been identified.
Steven James Young, 45, was killed by police gunfire Monday, according to the El Paso County coroner’s office.
Young ran from officers, who were about 11:30 p.m. at a Walmart, 3201 East Platte Ave., according to a sheriff’s office news release.
Young “brandished a firearm at officers” and an officer shot the suspect, police said. It was later determined that Young’s weapon was a Crosman Vigilante pellet pistol, a firearm replica.
At the time of the fatal shooting, Young was wanted on felony warrants including being a fugitive from justice, aggravated motor vehicle theft and multiple counts of vehicular eluding.
A stolen Jeep Cherokee, driven by Young, who had eluded officers in three earlier pursuits, was found in the Walmart parking lot after the shooting.
Investigators are reviewing the body camera footage of the officer who was involved. An investigation is ongoing.
