Aurora Crime Blotter: Woman receives fraudulent calls from a man claiming to be with the sheriff’s department

Fake ACSD scam. A woman was the victim of a fraud attempt by a man who called and claimed he was a deputy with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department on Aug. 15. The man told her they had issued warrants after she failed to report for jury duty, even though she did not remember being notified for jury duty. He explained that she needed to pay $1,990 to clear the charges. After the woman called the ACSD and confirmed he was not a real employee, she did not continue with the fraudulent instructions.The police have received other reports about the same scam.

McD’s brawl. Police responded to calls of a fight in progress at McDonald’s, 16891 E. Iliff Ave. Two men who are regulars at the store were sitting on the patio late at night Aug. 14 when a stranger approached them. The stranger was wearing three backpacks and was visibly intoxicated. The men began to argue and a brawl broke out, destroying one of the patio tables. A manager saw the fight and the blood on the patio and called 911. The drunk man fled the scene. Police could not find him.

Off the grid. A man was out of town on business when he got a call from his girlfriend. She woke up to no power at their residence in the 2200 block of South Vaughn Way, Aug. 9. After calling Xcel to report an outage, the technicians found the electric meter and cover had been stolen overnight. Xcel replaced the electric meter.

Walmart purse thief. A woman reported her purse stolen while she shopped at Walmart, 9400 East Hampden Drive, Aug. 15. She was not sure when the purse was taken from her shopping basket, nor did she see the suspect.
