A woman shot near a busy Aurora intersection during rush hour on Monday afternoon died on Tuesday, Aurora police said.

The still unidentified woman was wounded at about 5:45 p.m., at East Mississippi Avenue and South Havana Street, police said.

“During the initial investigation it was determined that two vehicles traveling eastbound on East Mississippi Avenue were involved in the shooting and a subsequent accident resulted in another vehicle becoming involved,” according to a police statement.

“The suspectap vehicle left the scene. It is unknown how many occupants were inside the two involved vehicles when the shooting occurred.”

Aurora Police spokesman Officer Bill Hummel said police are withholding details to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Police have not said if the woman was shot while in one of the vehicles, whether those in the vehicles were trading shots, or if the victim was a bystander.

Traffic on Mississippi was temporarily shut down in both directions after the incident.

The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s name following positive identification, and notification of her next of kin.

Witnesses are asked to call Agent Matthew Ingui with the Major Crimes/Homicide Unit at 303-739-6067 or they can call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers, 720-913-7867.
