Re: Aug. 25 Mario Nicolais column.
As a rape survivor myself, it has become apparent to me the lack of understanding of the devastating after-effects of rape/sexual assault. It seems that even in the Austin Wilkerson case, the presiding judge completely dismissed the lasting and negative effects that Kendra Heuer has to live with.
Survivors do not choose to be assaulted and no action that any person does means that a human should be violated and treated like a piece of trash. However, the perpetrator absolutely chooses to take advantage of someone and commits a crime. When will our government stop caring more about the perpetrator? When will survivors come first?
The perpetrator should have his life derailed and should have consequences. Unfortunately, our judges are failing survivors and rewarding perpetrators. If there are no consequences for their actions, they can and will rape again. I want a better future for the next generation than this.
