Apparently still half asleep, a boy awakened by Colorado Springs police as he slept in a stolen car put it in drive and sped away but couldn’t avoid smashing into cars, including a parked one and a police squad car — twice.

After running into the police car the second time, the boy abandoned the stolen car and took off on foot. Officers from the Sand Creek Division arrested him soon after, according to a police report.

At 2:09 a.m., officers spotted a stolen car parked on the 3400 block of Afternoon Circle. The officers saw the boy and ordered him out of the car. Ignoring the command, the boy put the car in drive and zipped out of the circle and onto westbound Fountain Boulevard.

When he turned north onto Landmark Lane he crashed into a parked car. Officers tried to trap him between the parked car and their squad car, but the suspected car thief backed up directly into the squad car. When the boy tried a second time to maneuver around the police car, he hit it a second time.

He then jumped out of the car and took off running and was “quickly apprehended.”

The name of the boy was not released because he is a juvenile.
