Re: “,” Sept. 4 editorial.
The Denver Post defends current policy that favors letting in family members of legal immigrants while citing studies that evidently indicate merit has little significance to job performance. The implication is clear that bodies arriving from anywhere, without regard to ability, are all that are needed to grow America’s economy.
Immigrants of the past, who came mostly from Europe, did not come expecting government handouts and the welfare benefits available to immigrants today. Rather, earlier immigrants came for the sole purpose of building better lives, independent of government and heavy taxation.
America’s economy and those of Europe remain relatively similar today. Why should we not assume that as our population changes to become more like those of Third World countries, our economy will also become more like theirs? Before someone claims that education is the answer, consider the lack of progress in narrowing educational performance between groups over recent decades.
