Broomfield security-tech firm Webroot hires new CEO after Dick Williams announces retirement

After founder’s tragic death, Williams helped focus the company on business clients

Broomfield Security firm Webroot bid Dick Williams, its CEO , a happy retirement while at the same time naming Mike Potts its new CEO.

Potts was president and CEO of Georgia-based security firm Lancope Inc., which was acquired in 2015 by Cisco. He most recently served as integration executive in the security business group at Cisco. He starts the new gig on Sept. 25.

Webroot is a long-time Colorado company, cofounded in 1997 by Steven Thomas. Thomas grew up in Boulder and created a computer program that cleaned up unwanted software. He sold his shares in the antivirus and spyware company in 2005 and .

When Williams joined in 2009, the Bay Area executive moved to Colorado and then  to be more centrally located and attract more tech talent. He revamped the company to focus more on business customers, although it still offered a consumer product. Last month, the company said it saw its , expanding its business segment 35 percent from the prior year. Its consumer segment grew 6 percent.

The company, which today employs 600 people worldwide, has also made a number of acquisitions in the past year, including last month’s and San Diego-based , which uses data science to detect malicious software.

But at age 74, Williams said it was the right time to retire and spend time with his family and friends.

“It has been my honor to be a part of this incredibly talented team for the past eight years,” Williams said in an email. “I think we have the right team in place, including outstanding leadership, to take Webroot to the next level. We have accomplished a great deal, and our company has never been in a better position in terms of strategy, execution and financial performance. I’m excited to see how Mike will build on this fantastic foundation.”

Williams will continue to serve on Webroot’s board.
