Burglars broke into a Colorado Springs pharmacy early Friday and stole a large quantity of prescription drugs that have have been linked recently to a numerous fatal overdoses across the country, according to police.

Concerned that the prescription drugs will soon end up in the hands of teens, a large detective and forensic team from the Falcon Division are scrambling to find evidence of who committed the burglary, said Lt. Howard Black of the Colorado Springs Police Department.

“These cases are quite concerning. The prescription drugs go out on the streets. It’s actually getting into the hands of children,” Black said.

The burglary happened at 2:24 a.m. at Professional Pharmacy, which is located in a medical office complex at 595 Chapel Hills Drive.

Black said pharmacy workers are taking an inventory of what prescription drugs were stolen.

“Clearly we have prescription narcotics that were taken. It sounds like that we have large quantities of narcotics taken,” he said.

Forensic experts are searching for DNA and fingerprint evidence and are trying to get all security video from cameras in surrounding blocks in an attempt to identify the burglars, Black said.
