Re: “,” Aug. 25 news story.

For 25 years it was my privilege to serve in the U.S. military with the best and most dedicated of Americans: black, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, white, male, female, gay, straight. Only 1 percent of Americans serve in the military, so those who accept this responsibility deserve respect and thanks.

So how is it that someone who received five deferments during the Vietnam War and thereby never served in the military can decide that any American willing to serve is unacceptable for military service?

Transgender personnel have served admirably in Iraq and Afghanistan, often serving multiple deployments. Where are the voices of military leaders (active duty, reserve and retired) speaking out against this ignorant, discriminatory, un-American action?

It is not transgender Americans who are unfit to serve in the U.S. military.  It is Donald Trump who is unfit to serve as commander in chief.
