
Longmont is about to begin investigating conditions and safety of all 17 plugged and abandoned oil and gas wells within its city limits.
“There is no known threat,” city officials said in a news release. “However, these investigations are being done out of an abundance of caution to confirm that there is no risk to the community.”
The city said residents can expect investigations to include site surveys and collections and analysis of soil, air and groundwater samples. On-site surveys and sampling will generally take one day to complete at each well site.
The investigations are intended to confirm that no water, soil or air contamination exists from past drilling activities. Information gathered will be made available on the city’s .
Terracon Consultants Inc. will perform the investigations under a contract with the city. Terracon also performed an earlier 2013 assessment of plugged and abandoned wells in Longmont.
