A man who fled a traffic stop is in serious condition after El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies shot him following a high-speed chase early Tuesday.
The incident began at about 2:45 a.m. when deputies attempted to stop a pickup near Security-Widefield. Deputies said the driver refused to stop and they chased the truck.
The pursuit “was called off due to high speed,” according to a Colorado Springs police news statement.
The driver continued driving recklessly, and deputies, with the help of Fountain police officers, re-engaged the pursuit and stopped the vehicle in a cul-de-sac in Fountain.
“Shots were fired, striking the suspect,” according to the news release.
Colorado Springs police are investigating the incident. Police are still interviewing those involved, and other witnesses, said police Lt. Howard Black. “There were multiple scenes, and a lot of witnesses involved.”
Until the interviews are completed, Black said, police won’t release details of the shooting.
The truck’s driver was taken to a hospital where he is listed in serious but stable condition.
Officers and deputies received minor injuries during the chase, but not during the shooting, according to the news statement.
The Sheriff’s Office has placed the deputies involved on routine administrative leave.
The Colorado Springs Police Departmentap Violent Crimes Section, Homicide Unit, responded to the scene and is investigating the incident.
