Thank you for publishing an article that shows the side of the Social Security disability story that we, as community resource navigators, experience with our participants applying for benefits. At our agency, my co-workers and I only assist with claims that we screen to have a strong chance of approval.

Despite amassing plenty of medical documentation, many claims are still denied initially. Then, we refer participants to attorneys with years of experience. The wait time makes some people want to give up. If or when they finally have a hearing, it can take three months to receive a written decision. If the decision is favorable, it can take two months to receive the back payment that is due the claimant. The process does not allow anyone to game the system.
