Re: “” Sept. 20 letter to the editor.
Itap one thing for a reader to opine that teachers and police are two of the most needed and undervalued professionals in society, but to state that their incomes are barely above the level for free or reduced lunches is a distortion of the facts.
There are various income levels based on the number of household members, and household income (not just individual income). Many individuals starting their career in either profession are single and without children, therefore any comparison to the “free/reduced lunch” program levels is pointless. In addition, if $41,000 is barely above the level, can you really say that $51,000 is also barely above the level when it is 29 percent greater? Omitted is any mention of the health care, retirement and other benefits available to these two professions that many others do not receive.
Unfortunately too many people automatically believe what they read in the newspaper or hear on TV. “Fake news” isn’t simply fabricated news, itap also information that is inaccurate, exaggerated or distorted.
