Re: “,” Sept. 24 sports story.
I was disappointed to see many of our Broncos kneel for the national anthem on Sunday. The national anthem and our flag are bigger than any president. They represent us, “we the people,” the fans, our servicemen and women, those who died to defend the flag and the great idea that is America.
I am all for people speaking up for injustice and supporting their cause, but disrespecting our flag is disrespecting us! Although I am a huge Broncos fan, I am disappointed and chilled by what I saw on the sideline.

President Donald Trump’s assertion that his profane verbal attack on football players who take a knee during the playing of the national anthem “has nothing to do with race” is disingenuous, coming from the guy who pushed the birther lie and pardoned Sheriff Joe Arpaio and has kind words for white supremacists and KKK types. To me it’s pretty obvious that he would like to ignore that the protesting players, in calling attention to police violence against blacks, have a solid basis for their actions. According to The Washington Post, at least 232 blacks were fatally shot by police officers in 2016. Of that number, 34 percent were unarmed black males.

Re: “,” Sept. 24 Mark Kiszla column.
One man’s “powerful display of unity” is another man’s display of disrespect to the American flag and all who have served and died defending our country. Mark Kiszla wrote that “opening a conversation by calling somebody a SOB generally fails to establish common ground for problem solving.” This is exactly what the NFL players chose to do by sitting or kneeling during the national anthem.
NFL players have unlimited access to the American public through TV, radio, print and public appearances. They could have delivered a clear, concise message detailing their grievance and backed it up with a plan of involvement to legitimize their intentions.
Who is the petulant child that Kiszla described — our president or the NFL players who can only muster taking a knee for their cause?

Re: “,” Sept. 25 editorial.
Bravo! Your editorial was spot on. Thank you for the wise words. Once again President Donald Trump tries to give us a fake spin that football players taking a knee dishonors the flag and veterans. He doesn’t get it that the gesture is a protest against racial discrimination.
These signs of Trump’s incredible moral and intellectual deficiency were all glaringly obvious during his campaign. A tiger does not change his stripes. We grieve inside for all the harm this person (I cannot call him a man) is doing to our country and the rest of the planet.
