The final federal permit is still pending for what will be the largest public works construction project in Boulder County in decades if it is approved — but free burgers and hot dogs were nevertheless served Saturday to mark an early benchmark in the endeavor.
The occasion is Denver Water’s having secured a certificate of occupancy for the Gross Reservoir Expansion Project’s Public Information Yurt, located at 3656 Gross Dam Road, roughly a mile south of the reservoir located in southwest Boulder County.
Why a yurt?
“We wanted to choose a structure that would be open, inviting and fun,” said Denver Water spokeswoman Stacy Chesney. “We thought a yurt was the perfect fit to draw in visitors to help share information about the project, as well as to fit in with the natural environment of the area.”
Denver Water is currently waiting on a permit from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the final approval needed at the federal level to go forward with an expansion that would see the dam at Gross Reservoir raised by 131 feet, expanding its capacity by 77,000 acre-feet to a total storage capacity of 118,811 acre-feet.
