Various activist groups held a rally at the State Capitol Saturday against U.S. Fish and Wildlife’s plans to build a visitor center and trails at the former Rocky Flats nuclear weapons production site north of Arvada.

The judge ruled that because federal officials have not started plans construction plans, the claim that proper environmental reviews had not be conducted was not “ripe.”

The groups present included Rocky Flats Right to Know, Rocky Flats Downwinders, the Ambushed Grand Jury, Environmental Information Network and Rocky Flats Nuclear Guardianship.

Speakers said it was important to continue holding rallies to educate the public, especially recently transplants who haven’t heard about the site. The groups have also been reaching out to school districts in an attempt to stop field trips to the site.
