The start of Colorado’s Monday at the state Capitol was marked by recognition of Sunday night’s mass shooting left more than 50 dead and hundreds injured.

“Tragedy has struck,” state Senate President Kevin Grantham, a Republican representing Fremont County, said in addressing fellow lawmakers. “There are several in this room who I know have experienced such tragedy directly. Our hearts go out to you and continue to.”

Grantham said he had relatives at the concert venue where the massacre, , took place. He said they are OK.

“I had family at this very venue last night,” Grantham said.

The state Senate held a moment of silence in recognition of the shooting’s victims.

House Speaker Crisanta Duran, D-Denver, also noted the shootings in speaking with reporters, calling it a “tragedy.”
