Re: “” Oct. 16 letter to the editor.

In commenting on Krista Kafer’s column regarding the entitlement mentality on birth control coverage, letter-writer David Wolf astutely points out that the real issue is that the government is allowing specific religious or moral objections to determine public policy. Over a century ago, the U.S. government prohibited polygamy even though it was a central tenet of the Mormon religion at that time. Similarly, Americans abhor genital mutilation even though it is part of a long-practiced tradition by people from many countries. Virtually all Americans would assert that these religious and cultural practices should not happen in America, and both are against federal law. Indeed, it is the governmentap responsibility to prohibit these acts, regardless of religious or cultural beliefs. What Mr. Wolf points out is that our current government is not only tolerating Christian beliefs, but promoting them. It seems that the boundaries are different when we talk about Christianity. This was the danger our founders recognized when they separated church and state.
