Denver Public Schools has been tied to a corporate reform movement for the past 12 years, thanks to the Michael Bennet/Tom Boasberg mindset.
As a retired DPS teacher and public school advocate, I can testify to the fact that the “choice” model is a sham. Parents and students are being played for fools in this smoke-and-mirrors display. When public education is being modeled on what may work in business, our students are the losers.
A strong, well-resourced, well-funded neighborhood school established in a collaborative environment is what works to build lifelong learners and strong communities. It is time to turn DPS focus back to educating all our students equitably and equally.
Competition may work in the business world. It has no place in our public schools. Denver residents should put a stop to the privatization/choice public school system our current board and Superintendent Boasberg are pushing.

The Denver Post Editorial Board endorsed Rachele Espiritu, a Denver Public Schools board District 4 member running for re-election. I concur with the editorial board’s assessment that Espiritu’s academic and professional background in behavioral health makes her a standout candidate for the school board.
My brother has severe dysgraphia, which is like dyslexia, but itap a physical manifestation of the symptoms. This is obviously a challenge for him and he gets left behind in every classroom he’s been in. Thatap why I think itap so important to have a school board member who understands not just the academic needs, but the complex social and emotional needs of every student.
Students like my brother can succeed when schools personalize academic curriculum, which focuses on the “whole child.” With a Ph.D. in children’s social-emotional well-being, Espiritu is the only candidate running for DPS board with that kind of crucial experience.
