Former President George W. Bush speaks at a forum sponsored by the George W. Bush Institute in New York on Oct. 19.

Former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, as well as Sen. John McCain and others, have recently taken their turns rightly denouncing the toxic atmosphere in our country created by President Donald Trump’s actions and rhetoric. It’s highly unlikely their words will have any impact on Trump (other than yet another tweet in response) or his followers. But these men of character are speaking out nonetheless, at least partially as a means to protect their own legacies. Those who stay silent now will be remembered by history as complicit in this embarrassing debacle of a presidency.
