Greeley officers fatally shot a man who had backed into a police vehicle and brandished a handgun out of the driver’s side window in the early hours of Saturday morning.

On Friday night, Greeley police officers responded to a tip that a man with two felony warrants who was possibly armed was heading to a mobile home on West First Street west of North 23rd Avenue.

The man, later identified as Danny Sanchez, a 40-year-old transient, entered a vehicle at the location around 1:45 a.m., according to a statement from the Greeley Police Department. When police officers approached the man, he backed up his vehicle, ramming into an officer’s car.

He drove off quickly, sparking an 8-minute pursuit where officers saw him point a handgun out the window, police say. The man returned to the mobile home park at about 1:55 a.m. Officers confronted the man, who did not follow commands or submit to arrest, police say.

Officers shot and killed Sanchez.

Sanchez had warrants for a parole violation for escape out of the Department of Corrections, a felony warrant out of Larimer County for menacing and previous offender in possession of a weapon, and driving despite losing his license for previous DUI arrests. Police records also noted violent tendencies.
