Doherty and Coronado high schools will have extra security on their campuses Monday in Colorado Springs after one student was killed early Sunday in a triple shooting.
An email was sent to parents Sunday saying the schools had been receiving inquiries about the shootings, and whether they were connected to the schools. “Because of the possibility of any connection to our school, we are putting the proper security and mental health measures in place so we can help keep all our students safe,” the message said.
A juvenile male was shot and killed and two were wounded early Sunday outside a 24-hour Mexican restaurant in northeast Colorado Springs hours after a triple shooting at a house party three miles away, police said.
Here is the full email sent to Coronado families:
Dear Coronado High School Families,
You may have heard the news regarding two shooting incidents that took place in our community early this morning. While the Colorado Springs Police Department is still investigating both shooting incidents and are not officially identifying the individuals involved, we have been asked several times if the individuals are connected to our school. Please know we do not have many details about this ongoing investigation, but because of the possibility of any connection to our school, we are putting proper security and mental health measures in place so we can help keep all students safe. There will be increased security presence and counselors on our campus tomorrow. We know there is a lot of chatter on social media regarding these two incidents. Please encourage your student(s) to refrain from spreading rumors.
