I used to have an opinion.
I was interested in politics and listened to my representatives. I respected others’ views, and valued different perspectives.Today, everyone has an opinion, though itap probably no more now than before. The difference, it seems, is that each person believes their opinion to be the only, the true, the “I’m right, you’re wrong.” aps take the form of sound bites, statements without substance, trees without a forest. Easier, it seems, not to speak than to receive the random, often virulent responses that pass as discourse.
Our current leaders say they want to “make America great again.” To me, greatness recognizes that we all hold opinions; we can be respectful, listen and, maybe, learn. “Greatness” isn’t yesterday’s echo, itap a hope for tomorrow. There isn’t an “again”; there’s a today that continues.
I used to have an opinion. Perhaps I still do.
