Re: “” Oct. 27 Steve Lipsher column.
Steve Lipsher criticizes the use of phone books. It will come as a huge surprise to him, then, to learn that not every household has a computer or a smartphone (gasp! horrors!). Those of us in the senior citizen category, as well as many in rural or low-income areas, haven’t the money or the cellphone and internet access or the technological expertise to make use of computers and smartphones. In some cases, I know people who don’t want either in the house.
And on the ease-of-use topic — I can reach in the drawer, pull out a phone book and find a phone number (or peruse multiple companies offering the same services) far quicker than I can climb the stairs, turn on the computer and wait for it to get internet access before starting to play in the “search” mode.
I’ll take a nice paper phone book any time. At least I feel I can trust a company that actually lists a real address and phone number and isn’t just some clown with a smartphone, operating his “business” from the back of his van.
