7-year-old launches campaign to help homeless in Colorado Springs

Wearing a spunky red velvet Santa dress her grandma bought, 7-year-old Ashley Scott delivers this insightful yuletide decree: “The homeless need a Merry Christmas, too.”

Ashley is making sure they get one.

“I feel sad for them,” Ashley said. “Doing this makes me feel happy.”

The Rockrimmon Elementary second-grader started a small-scale holiday benefit for the homeless last year. This year, Kids Care Too has grown into a community-wide project. Ashley and her mom, Anne Turnbaugh, ran the whole production last year. The pair baked cookies and used some of their holiday spending money to buy blankets, socks and gloves. This year, about 20 businesses — as well as Ashley’s school — are joining the effort.
