An RTD light rail train stops at 16th Street and California Street on March 8, 2015.

Years ago, it was an enlightened decision to build a light rail system for the Denver metropolitan area. However, it seemed short-sighted at the time to not include an underground rail system for central Denver, a decision that certainly was based on cost and the potential impact of construction operations. Given the recent dramatic growth of Denver and the worsening traffic congestion, it is now time to revisit that decision.

An effective way to reduce traffic is to provide additional mass transit within the city core and to established neighborhoods such as Capitol Hill, Congress Park, Cherry Creek, Hilltop, Park Hill, and Washington Park through construction of a subway system. This would provide much greater long-term benefit to the community than placing part of Interstate 70 underground or the myriad of capital improvement projects promulgated by the Mayor Michael Hancock’s administration. Perhaps itap time to reconsider?
