Once again, George F. Will displays his ignorance of matters automotive. He seems to mock government standards to improve fuel economy by noting the most popular vehicles are pickup trucks. This ignores the great improvements in automotive technology that have resulted from this now 50-year-old mandate. For example, the two vehicles that sit in our garage, a small crossover and compact sedan, boast specifications that in my younger days were found only on race cars and expensive sports cars. Add to that many cars can be driven 100,000 miles on a set of spark plugs, making them almost maintenance-free for their useful life. Sometimes these mandates have beneficial and perhaps unintended consequences.
