An explosion and fire that injured two men Monday night in Weld County likely was sparked by an illegal hash oil cook.
The incident, in the 7600 block of Weld County Road 21, severely burned a 71-year-old man and a 32-year-old man, according to the sheriff’s office. On Monday night the sheriff’s office initially said the men’s ages were 70 and 20. The men, who have not been identified, are in serious condition at North Colorado Medical Center.
“Evidence of a butane hash oil extraction process” was uncovered at the scene, and the Weld County Drug Task Force is taking part in the investigation.
Eleven firefighters, four trucks and two support vehicles from the Fort Lupton Fire Protection District battled the fire, which included multiple explosions before firefighters arrived, said Fire Chief Phil Tiffany. The explosions and fire destroyed a trailer and a car.
