Congress should adopt two pieces of legislation that will provide health insurance and protection for young people. The first: reauthorization of funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This program will be unfunded on Jan. 31 if no action is taken in Washington. Kudos to Colorado Sens. Cory Gardner and Michael Bennet, co-sponsors of a bill to fund CHIP for five years.
The second issue involves the fate of thousands of undocumented young people brought to this county as children who will face possible deportation as the protection afforded them by DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), created by President Barack Obama, expires. The passage of the DREAM Act would allow these aspiring youth to remain here legally to work, study and become contributing members of the only society they have even known.
The well-being of our youth must take precedence over partisan politics.
