A man suspected of stealing a car in Greeley Thursday morning was shot and killed by police just outside the city, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office said.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
The Weld County Sheriff’s office said Greeley Police found the stolen red 2018 Chevy Cruze in a ditch in the area of Two Rivers Parkway and 37th Street in west Evans. When they talked to a bystander who had offered to help get the vehicle out of the ditch, they learned the suspect was in the man’s truck.
When police attempted to contact the suspect, he ran. The Weld County Sheriff reported that they yelled at him to stop and they tried to stop him with using non-lethal bean bag rounds. The man then allegedly pulled a gun and the officers shot him.
The man was pronounced dead on the scene, the sheriff’s office said. His identity has not been released.
The sheriff’s office said a critical incident response team has been activated to investigate. In the meantime, the officers involved in the shooting have been put on administrative leave.
