LANDOVER, Md. — For the first time since he signed with the Broncos in May, veteran running back is inactive for Sunday’s game against the Redskins.
Broncos coach had said earlier that the team planned to give rookie De’Angelo Henderson time on the field before the season expired and with four backs on the roster, someone had to go down.
Charles, the league’s all-time rushing average leader, signed a one-year deal with the team in the offseason after recovering from multiple knee surgeries and has been used primarily on situational downs. In recent weeks his reps have waned as and carried the load.
Sunday’s healthy scratch could mark the end of Charles’ tenure in Denver, should the team stick with Henderson for the season finale on Dec. 31.
On Saturday the Broncos downgraded receivers (ankle) and (thigh) to out after both were originally listed as questionable to play Sunday. The two stayed behind in Colorado to continue their treatment.
To fill the void at receiver, and will see an increased workload, along with rookie Isaiah McKenzie. McKenzie has been inactive the last two games after losing the starting punt-returning job to Taylor.
Taylor will continue to return punts Sunday.
Rounding out the Broncos’ inactive list are offensive linemen Elijah Wilkinson and J.J. Dielman, and defensive backs Brendan Langley and Michael Hunter.
