Monte Whaley’s article on Colorado high schools not graduating enough students on to top universities and post-secondary vocational programs is important. What was not mentioned is how chronically under-resourced Colorado schools are, and how challenging it is to build the kind of culture to help kids succeed when resources are stretched so thin. In Colorado, only voters can raise taxes. Colorado is a bit of an outlier in that we outperform many of the states that spend at the levels we do — because a combination of some terrific work done by educators and above-average rate of college degrees among adults. But until we get honest about the fact that money does matter, we will have a hard time moving the needle higher.
