A Weld County man faces charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and second-degree arson after he allegedly shot and wounded one man and killed another before trying to set his body on fire.
According to an arrest affidavit for Sammy Vega, the early morning hours of Dec. 16 turned deadly when he allegedly shot Isael and Emmanuel Baca while the cousins were parked on property Vega rented about a half mile from the intersection of Weld County Road 55 and Colorado 52.
The affidavit doesn’t say why the cousins were there. But Isael Baca later told investigators he was outside the truck when he heard two gunshots. Vega then allegedly fired two shots at Baca, wounding him in the side, the affidavit said.
Baca ran and later arrived at a work site on a frontage road south of Interstate 76. A worker there called 911. A passing motorist later reported Baca’s pickup truck, with Emmanuel Baca’s body inside, was engulfed in flames, the affidavit said.
Vega is scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
