A Weld County sheriff’s deputy shot an armed suspect after a chase Sunday morning.

The deputy was working a DUI shift at 2:41 a.m. and observed a vehicle speeding on Colorado Highway 52 and College Avenue in Fort Lupton. The driver refused to stop, and the deputy gave chase.

The vehicle came to a stop in the 200 block of McKinley Avenue. “The suspect was armed with a handgun. The deputy discharged his weapon,” according to a sheriff’s release.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, and his condition was unknown, the release said. An arrest warrant was issued for Michael Dwayne Nash, 54, of Fort Lupton, and it included a recommendation for charges of felony menacing, felony eluding, prohibited discharge of a weapon and harassment related to domestic violence.

The deputy, who was not injured, has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
