Re: “Hanging Lake plan to limit daily visitors will help protect fragile ecology,” Dec. 22 news story.
The U.S. Forest Service’s new plan for the Hanging Lake recreation area demonstrates everything that is wrong about this backward federal agency’s understanding of its primary current job, which is to develop and manage high-quality forest recreation areas and opportunities.
Hanging Lake is today an urban forest park connected to Denver by the dramatic prelude of the most beautiful interstate highway in America, I-70. It needs to be redeveloped as such, including a sky gondola tramway to the lake, which, if done with the same care as was devoted to building I-70 through Glenwood Canyon, can actually enhance the natural qualities of both the lake and the trail to the lake. Also needed is a cool visitor center and facilities for the disabled.
Who pays for this? We do. Through parking and usage fees. Just like at ski areas.
