The Colorado Department of Transportation warned drivers in the mountain corridor to head home early on Saturday as a storm expected to start around noon will likely intensify after 6 p.m., dropping 5 to 10 inches of snow.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Colorado’s high country, which includes Interstate 70, the Central Mountains and the Southwest San Juan Mountains, starting Saturday afternoon and lasting through Sunday morning.
Drivers should expect enforcement of chain laws and potential closures, CDOT said. Those not following chain laws can be fined $130. Vehicles blocking the roadway could be fined more than $650.
When implemented, Traction Law requires cars to have snow tires, tires with a mud/snow designation or four-wheel drive. Tires must also have a minimum of one-eighth inch tread. Passenger Vehicle Chain Law requires every vehicle to have chains or an alternative traction device, such as an AutoSock.
