Re: “Trump supports path to citizenship for up to 1.8 million ‘dreamers’ in new White House proposal,” Jan. 25 news story.

I am not personally invested in the fate of the Dreamers, but I think it is the right thing to provide them with legal protection and a path to citizenship. I am not opposed to a wall as long as Mexico pays for it. But taking my hard-earned money that I pay in taxes to pay for the wall — no way.

How about letting the Dreamers come up with the money to pay for the wall? Dividing the $20 billion cost among 1.8 million Dreamers amounts to $11,111 apiece. How about giving the Dreamers and others willing to contribute enough time to set up a fund for the entire $20 billion? Many of them should have $11,111 on hand. For those who don’t, I’m sure some enterprising lenders would be willing to lend them their share.

Under this plan, everyone wins. Dreamers are protected, the wall is built, and I don’t have to pay for it. And since many of the Dreamers are of Mexican heritage, Trump can even claim that “Mexico paid for it.”
