At what point in the last few years did our personal support for, or opposition to, the many topics facing our country become the definition of “Democrat” or “Republican”? I live in Douglas County, where I often keep my opinions to myself, lest I receive the scornful comment, “You must be a Democrat.” If I lived in a Democratic area, I could voice my opinion without fear, and Republicans might have to keep a low profile.

I support some socialized medicine programs — oops, a Dem.  I am a supporter of gun owners’ rights, within reason — oops, a Republican. I am pro-DACA — oops, a Dem. I am for women’s and LGBTQ rights — ?

I am first and foremost an individual who wants what is best for our citizens. My views should not automatically define my party line. Come on, everyone, breathe, be nice, and start thinking for yourselves.
