Re: “Democrats were wrong to go public with Trump’s language,” Jan. 19 Marc A. Thiessen column.
The true measure of a leader is what he believes when the cameras aren’t rolling; the true measure of a society is how it fights bigotry when itap easier to ignore. To claim that the truth should not be revealed for political points is hypocritical, since the secrecy behind Hillary Clinton’s emails was a major issue for Republicans during the election. Furthermore, the notion that Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans would sacrifice an immigration bill because a Democrat confirmed Trump’s crude remarks only reinforces the idea that the administration is willing to jeopardize Americans, and immigrants, for petty and superficial partisan fights. The truth is what separates free nations from oppressed ones, so to criminalize anyone for revealing the truth, regardless of the short-term political consequences, only leads to an assault on the basic pillar of democracy our country values most: freedom to judge our leaders and hold them accountable.
