Berend grew up as a part of the Nordic combined tradition in Steamboat Springs that produced Olympic medalists Todd Lodwick and Johnny Spillane, both of whom were world champions, too. Berend was only 5 years old when Steamboat hosted the last of its eight annual Nordic combined World Cup events but joined the NC program at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club as soon as he was old enough. He graduated from high school in 2013 and continued to train one more winter in Steamboat before being named to the national team and moving to Park City, Utah, where the national team is headquartered. PyeongChang will be his first Olympics
