Reid is the daughter of Olympic speedskater Beth Heiden and a niece of Eric Heiden, a hero of the 1980 Olympics. She attended the University of Colorado, where she was an NCAA champion cross country skier in 2014 before turning to biathlon on 2015. She received an undergraduate degree in 2013 (applied mathematics) and a masters in engineering (2017).
