Re: “Warnings ignored: Why PERA is barreling toward its second funding crisis in a decade,” Feb. 11 news story.
Reading your article about the Colorado Public Employees’ Retirement Association (PERA) brings back an issue I have never been able to understand. There may not be many people in my position, but here it is. I served in the state Senate for 12 years and became a part of the PERA system. I also receive Social Security from my late husband’s account. Because I receive PERA, Social Security deducts that amount from its deposit each month. I have tried to opt out of PERA, but am told that is impossible. As of a couple of months ago, PERA is now paying more than Social Security. I don’t understand why I cannot opt out of PERA and rely on Social Security for my retirement.
