People looking to turn over their bump stocks now that the city of Denver has implemented a local ban on the device, which is attached to a gun to increase its rate of fire, can do so at any Denver police station.
The local ban makes bump stocks illegal to sell, carry, store or otherwise possess within the city. Violators can be hit with a fine, which could range from $100 to $999, and/or incarceration from 10 to 180 days.
Denver City Council passed the ban at the end of January with an 11-1 vote. Bump stocks became the center of gun regulation debates after a shooter in Las Vegas used the device when he shot and killed 58 people last year.
Denver was the second city to implement a local ban after the shooting. The move was largely symbolic as the city has long prohibited the types of semiautomatic rifles that can be modified by the device.
Colorado’s legislature is considering a similar bill that is expected to fail in a GOP-controlled Senate.
