Re: “Interior Secretary Zinke launches push to save habitat for wildlife and boost hunting,” Feb. 11 news story.
Secretary of Interior Ryan Zinke has proposed creation of wildlife corridors in the West to encourage conservation of big game species: elk, pronghorn and deer. This could be a good idea, but only if its implementation includes recognition that many other bird, plant and animal species need such corridors for future survival in the face of development and climate change. Detailed plans for such corridors throughout the U.S. already exist, thanks to the Wildlands Network, an organization founded in part by noted ecologist Michael Soule and environmental activist Dave Foreman. Their vision of the Western corridor includes much of Western Colorado and emphasizes important areas such as Vail Pass and the Thompson Divide. I hope that Secretary Zinke will take such science-based studies under consideration if his proposal is followed by action.
